Lookit my engine. It’s purdy!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The machinist told me that it ran great, said he was sur prised how well considering the headers after break in have hardly any soot or anything at all in the exhaust ports. That would indicate to me that the camshaft selection was on point. O ther good news: the hack job I did painting my headers didn’t flake off, despite me not curing the high heat paint. VHT is some good stuff, I guess.

D rumroll for the numbers....

Kinja'd!!!

309 hp ! although mind you, that would be gross hp, not net. so... 280? as a guesstimate. More importantly I think:

Kinja'd!!!

Look at that power curve. tasty.

Kinja'd!!!

Also the damage incase you are interested. N ot too shabby I think.

That is a pretty power curve! And honestly not a bad price at all, especially considering it’s not a cookie-cutter Chevy 350.

That ought to move the car. Will you install a two-legged rear axle for proper burnouts?

It’ s already got an LSD, the only problem is the ratio is 2.41. I got to buy a whole new carrier to put different gears in it. It still did burnouts before so it should definitely do them now.

I checked your torques vs. some torques, and it appears you have several quality torques to torque with.

I drove a ‘79 Z28 for a while during high school. Even with the weak 350 and automatic that came stock, it was a fun car.  That 403 has more horsepower and a lot more torque.  I’d love to drive one with that much guts.  :)

That was lots of torque on that printout. So the machine shop includes a dyno run? Does that mean the engine is now properly broken in? I watch Engine Masters on MTOD from time to time and I wonder about building an engine, then immediately making a hard dyno run.

Very nice! Should be very good to drive with that torque curve.

Most, if not all, engine builders are going to break in the cam before releasing the job to the customer. There’s usually a pretty precise way to do that from cam manufacturer (and it happened at the engine plant on any new car), but once you’re past that it should be fine.

This one will be nice since I basically undid all the smog BS. I actually really like the th350 auto as well, considering I didn’t have much choice.

I have an engine I want to rebuild, a 250 straight-six GM. 268H Comp cam and 307 V8 Pistons. And I think a couple or other little machining tricks to the head. I have an old guru advising me.

Sí. And a T-5 5-speed behind it. But don't hold your breath yet because you may go purple and faint before I have it done.

So, before the rebuild, could you just mash it and smoke 'em?

It would burnout from a stop, even with the BS highway gears and “186 HP factory”. Low end torque is a massively underrated thing.

As for your question regarding the dyno, my machine shop charged an extra 500$ to break in the engine for me, which they do on a dyno. I would recommend it, especially depending on your cam selection. Flat tappet cams are notoriously touchy with break in, they also were able to tune it to get it running at peak. Should basically be plug and play at this point.

I like the sound of all of that. I am planning one of these years to rebuild a 250 straight-six GM engine with a 268H cam and 307 V8 Pistons that are crowned and increase compression. Weber 2bbl and a T-5 5-sp manual. Given my lack of experience building engines, paying to have them break it in on a Dyno would make sense. Did they discuss with you what oil they used on break-in or what viscosity they want you to run?

They used lucas break in oil, I’m going with good ol 10w30 high zinc conventional for the first thousand or so miles, then switching to valvolene vr1. You don’t want to use synthetic during break in. Vr1 is more affordable then say amsoil v-rod which is synthetic, and its much more available. Its the high zi nc you want with older engines.

When I had a Goodwrench reman 4.3L installed in my Safari van some years back, I did some research and the Engine Rebuilders Association of America — or similarly titled organization — had a recommendation which was, I think, 2,500 miles before switching to synthetic, whereupon, I filled with Amsoil XL5/30 which I’ve run ever since. When I rebuild the straight-six, I’ll probably use a straight-weight SAE 30. But I’ll look into the high-zinc thing you mention.

Interestingly, the latest Dexron transmission fluid, Dexron VI, is a full synthetic product. So no need to splurge on Amsoil there.

Yeah... unless you have a properly equipped shop and LOTS of time, that won’t happen.

I think most people here understand rebuilding engines is not something most people can do if only because they don’t have the space, equipment or time to do it.
